Their legs pumped. Their boots pounded over the grass and clumps of heather, breath rushing in and blasting out like angry steam engines, their tightly tucked arms cycling like the rods on locomotive wheels.

The night was black and thick with rainfall, splitting into daylight with a rending crash of lightning, which, after its blinding intensity, plunged the world into a blacker darkness than before.

A figure marched through this storm, shoulders hunched, eyes peering out from under the brim of a waterproof hood, teeth clenched. He moved with the measured motion of a man whose mind is elsewhere and whose body is repeating an action it knows well, its sole aim being to carry on until it reaches journey’s end. A thin beam shone from the lamp strapped to his forehead, and flying droplets of rain were illuminated by its light.
